Lev works in solid black, ornamental and black and grey. Most of his work covers large areas — an arm, a back, a calf — so it starts from the structure rather than from the motif.
The design is built on the body itself, not only on paper. Symmetry that looks right on a flat drawing skews the moment it crosses a muscle, and that is the hardest thing to correct later.
Large pieces are split into sessions by what the skin will take, not by what suits a calendar. A full sleeve usually runs over several months.
