Black and grey tattoos
Depth without colour. Everything is built from layers of the same ink, which is what makes the gradients the hard part.
Black and grey works one ink at different dilutions, so all of the depth comes from transitions. A gradient is hard to execute and harder to correct: an area taken too dark does not come back.
Over years the lightest greys are the first to fade, so good work in this technique does not rest on them alone to hold the shape. The structure has to be in the black as well — grey adds depth, it does not carry the image.
