The tradition this comes from solved the ageing problem a century ago: a thick outline holds the shape, with solid fills inside it. When everything softens a little over the years, the outline still says what it is.
Neo-traditional takes that construction and widens the language — more detail, a broader palette, a freer composition — without giving up the outline. That is what separates it from a colour drawing transferred onto skin, which has nothing to hold it together in twenty years.
